drain traps and pipes

Traps are made in two pieces so they can be swiveled to fit different fixture and drain alignments. Bathroom lavatory traps are 1 1/4. A "P" trap shaped trap is used for through the wall drains. An "S" trap is used for through the floor drains. Kitchen drain traps are usually 1 1/2.

Traps are connected to a tailpiece on the drain assembly end and an extension connected to a male thread stub at the floor or wall by means of slip nuts.

To remove a trap, place a bucket underneath the trap to catch the water in the trap. Loosen the slip nuts (counter clockwise) at the tailpiece and extension ends until completely free. Free the trap from the tailpiece at the fixture end and then from the extension which fits into the floor or wall drains.

To install a new trap, slide the slip nuts over the tailpiece and the trap extension first followed by the rubber washers. Swivel the trap to align at both ends. Hand tighten the nuts. Check for good align and tighten the nuts.
